Judith Bluestone, a brilliant woman born with autism, founder of The HANDLE® Institute, International, LLC inspired me deeply, and helped me tremendously in many ways through her support, friendship, mentoring and brilliance.

In 2004, Bluestone was awarded a prestigous Jefferson Award — the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for outstanding public service. This was a big deal! It was bigger than Judith realized until she flew to Washington DC for the awards ceremony. She was honored with a group of inspirational Americans including Sandra Day O’Conner at a reception held in Washington DC. Some Jefferson Award Winners include Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, Jimmy Carter, Paul Newman and Oprah Winfrey.

Judith Bluestone’s journey began as she began to solve the riddle of her own autism, the result of in utero exposure to neurotoxins. Time permitting, you might enjoy exploring The HANDLE Institute’s Web site. To explore the world of neuroscience, and to get a deeper understanding of how a HANDLE program works please look at the UW Neuroscience for Kids Web site.

The HANDLE Institute has designated me to represent them in Skagit and Island Counties. My affiliation with The HANDLE Institute includes collaboration and access to their knowledge and experience. My goal is to partner with local doctors, schools, non-profits and individuals to bring HANDLE’s unique, gentle approach to understanding and helping people in our community with learning and behavioral challenges which can be addressed through the HANDLE approach.

Frequently asked questions:

How can I be sure that a HANDLE program is worth the trouble and expense?
November 26, 2006 a Seattle Times article titled Parents Frustrated by Many ADHD Treatment Options by Melinnda Tsuchiya (resale@seattletimes.com or 206-464-3113 for reprints) suggests parents first try a HANDLE program before drugs or other more expensive treatments, and finally, "that they trust their gut about whether a diagnosis or treatment is right for a child.”

What do you do?
I observe sensory systems by reading the body. I am trained to understand the causes of impulsivity, distractibility, hyperactivity, struggles with reading and math, headaches, and other troublesome quirks. Discovering the root of specific problems gives us the information we need to develop a program.

How does a HANDLE program work?
Recent revelations from studies on neuroplasticity suggest that stimulating neural pathways through organizing the body optimizes efficient learning across the lifespan. HANDLE’s Gentle Enhancement® activities form a non-drug and movement-based program that are based on these principles. To the untrained eye, the program looks like child’s play. Actually, these gentle activities offer sophisticated ways to improve brain function. Hula Hoops, blow pipes, crazy straws and other simple “props” aid in organizing the body and with it, the brain.

How long does it take?
Individualized programs usually take 20 minutes daily and the pace varies depending on regularity of practice, age, and severity of challenges. Adults who maintain the practice retain or increase benefits. A HANDLE program for the over 50 crowd helps ensure that we know where we put our reading glasses and where we left our keys!

What kind of people come to visit me?
Smart, sensitive, creative, funny, wonderful people. We are talking about special people, extraordinary people, who just need a gentle lift.
