Neurotherapy For Kids

When young people come to me they are having a hard time learning in school or at home or both. Trouble getting school work done on time is one worry I hear about lots. Other things that young (and not so young) people worry about are having a hard time focusing, not understanding things people tell them, problems writing ideas or just writing period.

There are lots of other things but you’d be here all night if we listed them all. Maybe there are some things you wish would go better for you.

It is interesting to discover how our brain works by looking at how our body works. Sometimes when our brain and body don’t work well together we feel clumsy or tired or get a headache or hate being touched. We can make our brain and body stronger by having them work together. Like a team.

First we have to be detectives discovering clues about why you have trouble in school, at home or making friends. Usually when people come to see me I ask lots of questions about what is going well or what they would like to go better at home and school.

Then I ask you to do strange things like tap your fingers a certain way or look through funny glasses. There are other things too, but I won’t tell you now, that would give the fun away. Usually, when we are done, everyone goes away tired and happy. It feels good to feel understood.

We get together again. This time we put all the clues together to understand how your body and brain can work better together. This part is interesting, especially for parents. Kids often just want to get to the fun part.

Program

Once we know what part of the body to work on to help the brain get stronger I teach you activities to make your brain stronger. I provide you with the tools for the job (if you don‘t have them already like fingers and lips). You might learn special ways to use crazy straws, blow pipes, hula hoops and other things. Then, when you know how to do your activities pretty well, you come back and teach it to me!

Sometimes things get better but not as good as you would like. (They never get better if you don’t do your activities.) Then we can suggest other activities, or some different kinds of therapists for sound or sight or nutrition or a full HANDLE® evaluation in Seattle at The HANDLE Institute.

After that you have tools to fix a lot of things and you can do it yourself…with help from people who love you.

Parents: Young kids might like to view a brief PowerPoint. If you have the software at home, just click to download the PowerPoint to your computer. If you don't have PowerPoint, some browsers (such as Internet Explorer 8) will play it, or you can download a PowerPoint Viewer.
